MEMORIAL PARK
5065 S 1900 W, Roy, UT 84067 (behind the Roy City Municipal Center)

This small park is about 4 acres. It is part of the 9-1/2 acre city complex (Hope Center, city center, and fire station). The park has two covered picnic tables and a walking path around it. On the west side is a Blessing Box (food pantry) stocked by citizens for those in need.

Memorial Park is surrounded by trees, including many of the 79 trees planted in October 1990 by the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Foundation to memorialize infants in the United States who died due to causes of SIDS in 1989. The area, which is a retention basin, eventually came to be nicknamed "SIDS pond." On August 6, 2019, it was formally named “Memorial Park.”

Memorial Park is also widely known for its holiday lights display, a project suggested by Roy citizen Al Poppell in 1998. Over 1 million lights adorn Memorial Park and the remainder of the city complex during the holiday season, lit from the week before Thanksgiving till the first days of January. Roy City’s annual tree lighting ceremony is a spectacular event: the Mayor and Miss Roy turn on the holiday tree lighting display, local elementary schools often perform, and Santa makes an appearance.

The first lights for the trees were donated by families of Roy’s school children and originally were hung by citizens. Within a few years, Roy City’s Public Works took over the annual decorating and purchased replacement lights as needed; light strings are now brighter, less expensive, longer-lasting LED.  

Beginning in 2018, teddy bears were added to the holiday display as a further remembrance of those we have lost. More teddy bears will be added until there is a "teddy bear forest" amongst the trees. If you are interested in donating, please contact Public Works at (801) 774-1190.

Enhancing the holiday light display, music is transmitted over the radio on 90.7 FM. Every 30 minutes, new songs play, and the lights sync in motion to the song being played.
