The
mission of the Roy City Police Department
is to work with all citizens to preserve
life, maintain human rights, protect property
and promote individual responsibility and
community commitment.
A Note from Chief Greg
Whinham . . . . . .
The newest
scam floating around the Internet is called
phishing - attempts to steal personal
account information. Phishing starts when
criminals send you e-mails that say things
like "your e-bay account needs
updating". It could be your bank,
internet access, mortgage loan, or other
accounts that they bail you with. The e-mail
contains either a link or on internet address
that looks like a legitimate link to eBay
or the account website referred to in the
e-mail.
In reality
the link or address will take you to a website
that looks authentic, but is fraudulent
and running on some overseas server, where
scammers try to get you to provide credit
card and personal information. Phishing
attacks have gotten more sophisticated and
once you log on to their site, a program
may download and launch in the background
that can send the phisher screen shots of
your computer, including passwords.
If you receive
an e-mail telling you that an account of
any type needs updating, do not follow any
links within the e-mail or use any of the
contact numbers it may provide. If you have
an account with the institution the e-mail
is supposedly from, contact them either
by phone or by e-mail address that you validate
as being legitimate from a source outside
of the e-mail you received.
Never
give information to anyone who contacts
you soliciting it, you should initiate the
contact.
