Swimming Level Course Content List

Infant and Toddler: Children 1 to 3 years of age. (with the parent in the water) Basic water orientation, buoyancy and purposive skills are demonstrated to the parents in a fashion that is teachable to the child. Basic safety around the water and first aid are covered. This is generally a well tolerated class by the child and a good beginning in the water for both parent and child.

Preschooler: Children 4 & 5 years of age. (Without the parent in the water) Basic water orientation, breath control, buoyancy and purposive skills are covered. The child is taken through a progression of skills in a controlled fashion so as to acquaint and instruct the child in the many dimensions of swimming. The child is required to front float, back float, swim two of their body lengths with windmill arms flat on the top of the water to pass. Many children do not pass but go to level #1 when they turn 6 years of age.

Level #1: (Water Exploration) Children who are 6 years of age on up but are not yet floating by themselves are in this level. The students will be taught breath control, floating on the front and back, an arm-stroke on their front (windmill arms) and an arm stroke on their backs (finning). Some students are able to achieve these skills and are started on the skills taught in level #2.

Level #2: (Primary Skills) Children who have completed all of the skills in level #1 can advance to level #2. The student will be taught the front crawl, back crawl and be comfortable in the deep end of the pool. Children who are fearful of the deep, even if the skills are completed should not pass to level #3.

Level #3: (Stroke Readiness) When children can swim the width of the deep end of the pool using the front crawl with good rhythmic breathing and the back crawl with confidence, they are ready for level #3. This level emphasizes form on the front and back crawl and adds the elementary backstroke. The student must be able to swim the length of the pool easily with the font and back crawl strokes.

Level #4: (Stroke Development) The first day of level #4 the student will be required to swim the length of the pool using the front and back crawls. The student will perfect these two strokes, improve the elementary backstroke and learn the kick for the sidestroke (scissor kick) and the kick for the breast stroke (whip kick). Diving from the side of the pool will be introduced also. This is a difficult level because the degree of form needed to pass.

Guard Start: The student that is at least 11 years old and has passed level #4 can take Guard Start. This class covers many of the skills that lifeguards need to know. Safety, first aid, scanning and basic rescue techniques are emphasized. The student also may purchase a booklet that covers many of the skills taught in greater detail. This is a good break for a swimmer after the difficult level #4 in that it does not deal with strokes. It is a good and well informative break from the normal progression through the 7 levels.

Level #5: (Stroke Refinement) When the student is proficient in all of the level #4 skills they may progress into the level which will refine all of the five basic strokes. The front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, side stroke and breast-stroke must be perfected at this level. The butterfly stroke will be instructed after the five basic strokes are completed. Diving from the one-meter board is begun.

Level #6: (Skill Proficiency) This level is a prerequisite to the Professional Lifeguard Training Course. Many skills will be covered in this level that will benefit the student when they take Lifeguard Training. Swimming distances and basic survival skills are taught. Most students that pass this level are exceptional swimmers and ready for advanced technique.

Lifeguard Training: (Taught in January and May) If you have interest in this certification you must be at least 15 years of age, have completed level #6 well and be able to pass the pretest given prior to the course beginning. Lifeguard Training is approx. 40+ hours long. When completed, the student will be certified in Professional CPR, Community First Aid and Safety and as a Professional Lifeguard.

Level #7: (Advanced Skills) The student must have successfully completed level #6 to register for this class. The class is also a prerequisite for Water Safety Instructor (Swimming Instructor). Students will learn about swimming for fitness and what determines aerobic fitness levels. The instructor will cover underwater swimming techniques, rescue breathing and CPR and other additional first aid issues.

Water Safety Instructor: (Taught in April) If you are 17 years of age, have completed level #7 swimming skills and have completed Lifeguard Training, you may register for Red-Cross Water Safety Instructor. This is a comprehensive class covering about 45 hours of in pool and class work.

Adult Beginner: Ages from 13 years on up with little or no swimming experience should take adult beginner. This class covers levels #1 and #2 of Red-Cross progressive swimming levels. Adults that are extremely afraid are very welcome. You will find that you are not alone. (TBA)

Adult Advanced Beginner: Ages from 13 years on up who can basically swim in the deep without fear should take this class. We will work on form, additional strokes and technique. (TBA)

Boy Scout Merit Badges: Arrangements made per troop or group of scouts wishing to pass off the merit badge. Call us at the front desk to make arrangements.

SWIM PROGRAM

PHILOSOPHY: Our program is based on two important concepts: We teach water safety and strive to help the student become more proficient in their swimming skills. Class size and student/instructor ratio are closely supervised in order to give the optimum advantage possible for each student to enhance learning and retention skills for swimming and water safety. Our classes are instructed by experienced Water Safety Instructors; trained and certified by The American Red Cross. We are proud of our program and hope you will be satisfied that it is the best program in the area.
